AVI is a collective name for a range of video files What you are missing is
the codec to play they file you are trying to open Download either AVI codec
or Gspot to find out what codec is required then look in www.vdchelp.com to
see if there is a free one available

Almost every AVI file I've ever seen that WiMP wouldn't play
has turned out to be a misnamed DIVX file. (This is
especially true of TV captures etc that are posted in the
alt.binaries.multimedia newsgroups.) Try renaming the file's
extension to "DIVX" (and installing a DIVX player if you
don't have one) and see if that fixes the problem.

At one time I was able to play DIVX format films in WiMP
after installing the DIVX codecs but for some reason I
haven't been able to do that since upgrading to WiMP 10.

Then why did I have no problem playing AVI with win Media
Player?

Because "real" AVI (whatever they are) files aren't a
problem for WiMP. The problem is DIVX files that have been
misnamed as "AVI" files. WiMP 10 chokes on them.

There are lots of codec's used for encoding AVI files WMV, Divx, Xvid ect
Basically if its not MPEG 1 or 2 its AVI.
