Graham-

Looks like you might be a resident video expert, so I thought I'd ask if
you'd help. I have a couple of other threads out there in different areas on
this subject.

Every time I try to capture video from a device in Movie Maker, I get the
screen that says MM has to close, whether I have a device hooked up or not.
Have spent a couple of hours on the phone with eMachines and all I get from
them is that it must be a software problem from installation and to reload my
system disks. I'm avoiding that because of the massive backups I'll have to
do.

Would you have any thoughts on this? Is there a workaround that would let
me capture video elsewhere in windows then import to MM? Importing doesn't
seem to be a problem. Or is there some other free or very inexpensive
software that might work?

Thanks very much for your kindness,

-Mike

Mike,
Have a read of these pages,
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/ProblemPages/CannotCapture.htm
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/Tutorials/OptimiseMyPcForVideo.htm

Look at windv for capturing,
http://www.myvideoproblems.com/WebPages/UsefulProgrammes.htm

If they don't help, can you list you system specs, cam make and model,
PAL/NTSC, how you are connecting, if you have installed any codec packs,
other video related software, if it worked previously and now doesn't and
any other info you think may be relevant.

Graham-

Thanks very much for your assistance.

I think my problem is very basic but don't know how to solve it. I just
started with WMM on a 3-month old eMachine, so don't know if it has ever
worked correctly.

Whether a device is connected or not, when I click the "Capture Video from
Device" link under Step 1, WMM freezes and tells me it has to close. All I
get from eMachines is that it must be a problem with the original software
load and to reload all my system disks (not desireable because of the
necessary backups). I even downloaded SP2 for Developers hoping that would
solve the problem, but it didn't.

If you have any thoughts, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks very much,

-Mike

Apart from the answers to the questions I posed in my first reply

If they don't help, can you list you system specs, cam make and model,
PAL/NTSC, how you are connecting, if you have installed any codec packs,
other video related software, if it worked previously and now doesn't and
any other info you think may be relevant.

Can you add the results of the tests on the pages I linked to, whether in
fact it is a camcorder you are trying to connect to the pc, if not what is
it and what connections are you using?
Then we can have a go at finding an answer.

Graham-

Just a brief note to let you know you were right. Once I connected by
firewire everything worked seamlessly. Thanks very much for your help, and
I'm sorry to be so dense.
