Editing is becoming frustrating as I'm trying to finish a short piece 2
minutes in length. The error I received this morning:

--------------------------------------------------
Solution found: install missing updates

Thank you for submitting an error report. The error was likely caused by:

Microsoft Windows Movie Maker

Your computer is missing updates that can fix or prevent the problem you
reported.

Click the following link to install recommended updates from the Microsoft
Update website now:

-----------------------------------

Ok. Thanks Microsoft. I'll go fetch some updates that my computer already
does for me nightly. I go there and there are no updates for Movie Maker and
I run a check to confirm. The other thing I'm working with 2.0 and I know
there is 2.1. Why doesn't microsoft build and 'check for updates' with the
program? Is there one? This crashing is going to make me switch to Apples
version.

Sometimes, Movie Maker has problems
with .jpgs, .mpgs, and .mp3s...converting
to alternative formats can sometimes help.
For example....bmp, .wmv, and .wma.

Have you read the following articles:

Movie Maker 2 - Importing MPEG Files

FWIW...Movie maker 2.1 installs as
a component of Win XP SP2.

Download Windows XP SP2

--->I'm not sure what you mean. Are you suggesting I take my content such
as jpg files or film footage that I have brought in from my video camera as
strictly bmp, .wmv, and .wma. Thats a lot of work and waste of time when
jpgs, .mpgs, and .mp3 are fairly standard formats.

--->I read the article
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Issues-Acceleration-and-Codecs.html

--->I started with looking
divxaf.ax codec - looked for this file on my machine but the search tool
returns no results. However there are a number of other codecs i guess I can
spend the rest of day searching for and renaming. Can you feel my pain?

-->On this article http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Video-MPEG2.html

--->I believe I'm imorting everything as MPEG 1 and I have no trouble
importing or playing clips within the project.

---->I'm sure I have XPSP2 as evidenced on properties display. I have the
home edition, version 2002 Service Pack 2

Before I spend a greater amount of time hunting little codec gophers in the
first article you referenced, how can I ensure a 2.1 download update. Can't
microsoft make this easier?

I do appreciate your help!

I mean that converting the source files to
different formats can sometimes eliminate
errors.

I'm not positive that the 2.0 version has
the following option but it may be worth
a look. Open Movie Maker and go to...
Tools / Options / Compatibility tab..

You will see the installed codecs and their
path. Also you can disable them.

If you are running WinXP SP2 and do not
have Movie Maker 2.1, there are two possible
ways to update.

1) Download and install a copy of SP2 from
the link I previously posted for you.

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys

2) Read the following articles:

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?
