WMM Hi8 to disk, 720x480 vs 640x480

New user. I'm trying to transfer my Hi8 tapes to disk and the only choice
WMM gives me is 720x480 which makes my home movies short and fat. I think I
need 640x480 but I can't find a way to specify it. My camcorder has "S
Video" as well as standard video output. I've tried both. My tuner card is
ATI eHomeWonder. The WMM Camera Settings shows "Lines detected: 525" on
either S Video or standard.
Thanks for any help you might be able to give,

720x480 is the standard size of a DV-AVI (NTSC) file... the standard aspect
ratio of 4:3 in Movie Maker views it as if it's 640x480... the widescreen
option views it as if it was 856x480....

If you're capturing it via a digital camcorder... it'll be the same as on a
DV tape... 720x480..... and will work fine.

Not sure about what all you said but you were right, it worked fine. I tried
a test DVD and it looks like the aspect ratio is OK at 4:3. Based on the
replays I was seeing on my monitor, it looked wrong but it turned out alright
on DVD.
Thanks for your help and if anybody knows how I can get it to look right on
both WMM playback and DVD, I'll be listening.

You don't mention what your DVD software is... but I've written to Sonic
recently about differences between how a widescreen movie is played by the
Windows Media Player and Movie Maker... versus how it's played by Sonic's
MyDVD.

The WMP and Movie Maker look at a tag in the file... a tag that tells it
that it's standard 4:3 or widescreen 16:9... and show it appropriately.

When I use a custom WMV file and give the movie to MyDVD, it doesn't look at
the tag... it uses the pixel dimensions... and considers 720x480 as standard
4:3. To get widescreen 16:9 on the DVD playback I have to use a custom
profile with 856x480 pixel dimension.

I'm using Sonics MyDVD. All this video stuff sure was a lot easier when it
was all 4:3. I guess we'll all get converted sooner or later but it sure is
a pain in the transition.
