Papa John or others:

Internet Explorer wasn't working, so I had to re-install
the XP operating system with the factory disks.

Before doing so, I backed up my data by burning the WMM
project to CD. I did not burn the WMM source files,
because they could not fit on a CD. I didn't think I
needed to.

Now that I've re-installed XP and I try to open the WMM
project from CD, it says that "either this is not a WMM
file or the file is corrupted."

Am I out of luck because I didn't save the source files
even though the WMM project is completely saved on the CD?

What do I do?
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Dave,

I assume you mean video source files and not still pix.... I guess you're
out of luck, as even re-capturing the files wouldn't work in MM2. See the
Managing > Source Files page of www.papajohn.org for some info about things
I've found you can do with source files, and things you can't. Maybe it'll
help a bit.

Dave,

Although the collection databases and project files don't link or relate to
each other, they both relate/link to the source files.

They both summarize the info in the source files, but don't contain the
detailed info needed to render a movie... for a movie, the source files are
needed.

The paragraph you mention on my website also says "A package of the project
file and the related source files could be sent to another computer, and the
project opened and edited there". You can't omit the source files from the
package.

Papa John,

It's painful to think my project is gone!

Originally, I imported six 1-hour digital tapes of raw footage and they
showed up in my collections tree as "Tape 1," "Tape 2", etc. and from these
collections I created my project. I read in the Managing > Projects section
of papajohn.org that "A project file is self-contained within Movie Maker,
in that the information in it is not related to the information in the
collections or collection database."
So my logic goes like this: if the raw footage I imported showed up in
collections, and a project file is not dependent on collections (according
to papajohn.org), then why can't I recover the project file? What's the
distinction between source files and collections?

Dave,

I import my Hi8 footage 3 ways:

- playing the tape in a digital 8 camcorder and using a firewire connection
- capture via a Dazzle 80
- feed into my laptop's TV tuner and convert the saved MPEG2 file

I mostly shoot with a Hi8 camcorder, as I don't yet own a digital one.

Papa John,

Okay, thanks for the clarification -- I appreciate your advice. I plan on
buying your book off Amazon later today.
One final follow-up question: The source files I will need to re-import
come from Hi8 footage. I originally imported them by borrowing a friend's
MiniDV cam and converting them to digital format first. Since I don't own a
MiniDV cam, is there a way for me to import my Hi8 files directly into WMM
with my Hi8 camcorder?
I ask only because the intro on papajohn.org describes how you started
with Hi8 footage on one of your projects, so I thought you might have an
easy answer.
