Movie maker used to start and suddenly it no longer does.

I am running XP home.

When I start it, a window pops up to stay "Window Moview Maker has
encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the
inconvenience". It gives me an option to transmit data to Microsoft.

After I transmit the data , I get a link saying I need to download updates -
been there done that, still nothing happens.

I would really like to get this going again ... can any one help?

Terry

Some users have reported problems
after installing IE7. If this applies to your
situation ...uninstalling IE7 may be worth
a try.

(927177) How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177/en-us

I've also seen a report that disabling the
ffdshow codec could be the fix. To accomplish
this...open Movie Maker and go to...Tools /
Options / Compatibility tab...Uncheck...
ffdshow / OK.

===
(You can disable ffdshow with this command:
regsvr32.exe /u "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax"
After running that command, the regular
DivX/XviD codecs will be used instead of ffdshow.
You can enable ffdshow again with this command:
regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files\ffdshow\ffdshow.ax" )

Thanks John.

There was no ffdshow directory in Program Files so I uninstalled IE7 and
Movie Maker is almost back in action now. It is starting now and I am able to
import a file but then when I try to drag and drop on the storyboard, the
whole thing crashes again.

Any suggestions?

You may have some incompatibility issues
with your source files. Have a look at the
following article:

File type compatibility with Movie Maker

Also you could disable Video Filters as
described in the following article and see
if an improvement is realized.

Working with Video Filters in
Windows Movie Maker 2.1

Also you may need to install an updated
Video Driver.

Try reducing your Graphics Hardware Acceleration
as per the instructions in the following article.

(272193) PI: How to Troubleshoot
Graphics Issues
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272193
(scroll down to:
Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP)

If it improves the issue, you need to search the
support website of your Video adapter's mfg. for
an updated video driver.

John,

I will give them all a try, though I must say that I do not understand why I
must go to extraordinary lengths as you indicate such as altering video
filter, reducing graphics acceleration, finding and installing new drivers
etc when these were not changed in the first place.

It would seem to be - on the surface - that I have to go to such exhaustive
means that this just isn't really worth it or something is incredibly wrong
with the software.

A simply installation of IE7 could have wreaked such havoc?

Good morning John,

Oddly, Movie Maker is working again without any further tweaks.

I went through the links you provided. File compatibility was not an issue.

Now on the video filters thing, I discovered that I have no "Compatibility"
tab when I got to "Tools -> Options" and that I have version 2.0 while I am
reading of a version 2.1 - and I do have all the Windows Updates installed
which need to be installed.

Perhaps then version 2.1 is not available to XP home?

The compatibility tab was introduced in version 2.1.

Yes, Movie Maker 2.1 is available for Windows XP...
it is installed as a component of Windows XP SP2.
If you have upgraded to SP2 and do not have 2.1...
have a look at the following link:

What can I do if I upgrade to Windows
XP SP2 and Windows Movie Maker 2.1
is not installed successfully?
http://tinyurl.com/65pfo

If you would like to install or reinstall SP2...

Download Windows XP SP2
http://tinyurl.com/6ubys

Generally, users install from the net but this
site allows you to download the complete
file to your hard drive before installing.

It's good for a network administrator because
you can burn it on a CD and install it on as
many computers as you need to.

And it's good for a single machine because
if you ever need to install it again...you'll have
it available without waiting for a download.
