WMM Crashing

I have a very large MPG file (16 gig) I am trying to split down to managable size files

WMM load the file and displays the first frame. However when I press play the display remains black. If I move the play cursor along the pklay track and press split, WMM reacts correctly and displays a second file in the Collection area with the new first frame correctly displayed. Then the fun begins as I drag the first section to the Storyboard. WMM crashes and needs to close. The diagnostic message is

Anyone got any suggestions

Hi there,

That error message is telling you that the MPEG codec has failed at a
certain memory location. To know exactly what it meant you would need
access to the source code for the codec (obviously not an option)

The solution would be to suspend the particular codec and replace it with
one that will work.....(it is an option but not always that easy

For an MPEG it is indeed a very large file. Converting it to DV-AVI would
probably solve the issue but what size file would you end up with !!!!

Dave,

Playback/importing of MPEG2 content is completely dependent on the third
party MPEG2 decoder installed on your computer. Most do not work well. See
the Importing Source Files > Video > MPEG2 page of my website.

If you can get that far with it in MM2, you might be able to use MM1 to open
it and do the conversion.

TMPGEnc can also convert an MPEG2 file into an AVI for use in MM2. There's a
link to it on my Setup > Software page.

In my opinion it is the codec issue. First of all Microsoft does not provide
the MPEG2 codec so atleast they can claim innocense (although just).
Furthermore, editing a video is different from playing it since editing
requires random access while during playing the video, the acess is
sequential. If a codec is written or tested only for sequential access, it
may not work properly in an editing program.

You have following options:
1. convert your mpeg2 streams to wmv (Use Windows Media Encoder)
2. convert your mpeg2 to a non compressed format (such as avi).
3. Try some other mpeg2 codec than the one you have right now.
