WMM crashes when importing video

I've been trying for weeks to compose a movie with Windows Movie Maker. The
problem I have is that every time I try to import a video (*.avi) file, I get
an error: Windows Movie Maker has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience. It then asks if I want to send an error
report. I recently installed a new mother board with new memory, so that's
not the problem. Searching through the help files doesn't seem to give me any
clue as to what is wrong or what can be done. I'd appreciate any help anyone
could give me.

I'm having a similar issue when I try to capture video from a device. As
soon as I click the "Capture video from device" link I get the same "WMM has
to close" screens. All I've been able to get from eMachines is that I need
to reload my system disks, which is problematic given that I'll have to back
up tons of stuff.

Any thoughts? And can you capture video from a device in any other way than
through WMM?

Thanks in advance for any help you may be willing to give.

It's a Sony digital video cam connecting via USB. However, WMM shut down
before I ever tried to connect a device. Very frustrating.

Are there Windows alternatives to WMM to for capturing video? Or any good
freeware?

Thanks very much for your reply.

PapaJohn-

Thanks for trying to help. However, I haven't gotten to the point to where
I can even connect a device. Connected or unconnected, no matter what, WMM
crashes and tells me it has to close.

Any thoughts on a fix or workaround? Any way to capture video other than
through WMM?

Thanks again,

-Mike

If you're saying that Movie Maker crashes when you try to open it and it has
nothing to do with capturing from your device... see the Problem Solving
section of my website.

If Movie Maker opens and it's an issue with your device... you need to tell
us the camcorder model..

Well, it's neither. WMM opens just fine. It crashed when I click "Capture
Video to Device." I don't believe it has anyhting to do with any device
attached. Whether anything is attached or not, it crashes when I click that
link and tells me it has to close. When no device is connected there's no
msg saying "no device connected" or anytthing like that - it just crashes.
Same outcome when I click with a device connected.

I do truly appreciate your efforts and apologize for being unclear in my
earlier communications. WMM opens fine - it just crashes when I click the
capture video link whether anyhting is connected or not. Since this is the
first time I have tried to use WMM I can't tell you if it has ever worked.

Thanks again,

-Mike

I checked your web site and realized there are several versions of *.avi
files are available. How do I know which is which? They play just fine
through Windows Media Player.

Just a quick note to let you knoqw you were absolutely right! Once I
connected by firewire everything worked seamlessly.

Thanks very much for your help, and I'm sorry to be so dense.

Thanks PapaJohn. I downloaded GSpot, ran the file on it and found the codec
that was missing. A short search on Google gave me the spot to download and
install the codec and now things are working just fine. I've just imported
four video files into WMM and will be burning them to DVD later. You were
quite the one to help and I really appreciate it.
