WMM conflicts with MC 2004

I want to use WMM to edit and create a movie. I use a Media Center 2004 PC
from Gateway (901X).
Problem: When I open WMM and load a video file (or clip) and then try to
preview the video clip in the preview window, also when the video clip is
placed on the timeline or storyboard, the computer jumps immediately to a
full screen mode, as if I am viewing a DVD movie file using Media Center, and
I can't back out or stop that process.

So, I lose all control buttons etc., and can't really edit the video. It
does this every time I start WMM. I'm using the latest version.

How can I fix this?
Thanks

Look at the codecs and turn any that might be interfering off, it's on a new
tab in the options window.

Hi, I did try that, in particular, turning off the Media Center codecs, in
fact, I removed checkmarks for all of them, but that did not help.
I was able to use Roxio Easy CD and DVD creator to accomplish the task, but

Unfortunately, MS won't sell me Media Center 2005 and Gateway pleads
ignorance of upgrades for that version, so far.
Any other ideas?

I was at M/S UK last week and met a guy who works on MCE, so I'll email this
on to him and see what response we get, stay tuned :)

What sort of file is it that you are taking into Movie maker? Is it an avi,
wmv or one of the dvr-ms files that the media centre creates when recording
live from tv?
Sorry for delay.

Hi, Sorry about my delay in replying, holiday stuff.
The files can be either an imported avi or wmv. It is not dvr-ms types that
I have recorded with media center (so far all I have figured out what to do
with those is use the Sonic Primetime that came with the Gateway/MC 2004, and
it only lets you burn, not edit).
This "bug" also happens if I merely import an animated Transitions, Video
Titles and End Credits, file for example and attempt to "play" it. Once I am
in the full screen mode, only way out is I click the Green button on the MC
Remote and jump into the Media Center interface, then exit. That puts me back
to the Movie Maker program. If I try to run the Transition, Title etc. again,
it does the same process.

If I capture video from the digital video cam and get the clip(s) in Movie
Maker, those react the same way, that is, I get an immediate full screen mode
when trying to preview the clip or a completed movie (before exporting to
media file type).

Hope that helps....,

Hi,
I have tried your suggestion, but still get the same problem. I also can't
find your sample screen shot attachment, maybe I don't know how to find it in
this newsreader screens.
Maybe you or others reading this can explain how I can insert or attach bmp
screen shots or a saved Graphedt grf file in this newsreader program?

Here are the word descriptions of what happens:
I dragged a Movie Maker collection countdown_blue.wmv video file into
graphedt.exe, it did automatically make a graph, as series of three boxes
connected by right headed arrows. The names in each box are: raw video 0,
Countdown_Blue. wmv: in0.....out0, WMVideo Decoder DMO; and the last "box"
has VMR Input0 Video Renderer. I can't access the "properties for these.

When I click the play button in graphedt, the monitor immediately jumps to
full screen mode, plays the countdown and then stops. I have no other way to
get back to the desktop except for pressing the Green button on the MC Remote
to open Media Center, then exit with the Remote back to the desktop. There, I
find the graphedt program window again with the "graph" info in its gray
window, plus a smaller "Active Movie Window" that is blank with no video info
in it. This Active Movie Window appears to be the viewing window that is a
part of Movie Maker.

I wish I knew how to insert the screen shots I made of graphedt or even a
saved graphedt file, or how to send it to you in another manner, but can't
see any method of doing that using MSIE/Newsgroup reader.

Hope this is enlightening somehow, and thanks,

You are probably are still looking at a codec/filter problem, even if it's
not showing up in the Compatibility tab. It sounds like something is being
pulled into the graph that won't connect to the Video Render, and is trying
to default back to the old video renderer.

Here's what you can try to do to debug:
1. Grab a copy of Graphedit. You can download it from:
http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/graphedit.html (Just grab
Graphedt.exe from the zip file! You don't need the rest of the filters, and
they might just complicate any issue you are experiencing.)
2. Launch Graphedt.exe on the machine experiencing the problem. Find one of
your video files that causes the bug, and drag it into the large gray area.
When you drop the file in, Graphedt should "automagically" buld the rest of
the playback graph. Push "Play" on the toolbar (the little green arrow), and
watch some of your file playback. Hopefully, this will exhibit the same
problem you are seeing in MM.
3. Take a screen shot of the graph, and post it back to the group.

I've attached a sample screen shot to show you what we're looking for. I
expect the filters in your graph to be somewhat different from the one's I'm
showing, and hopefully that will point us to the problem.

Hope this helps!

Hi, again
Using Roxio DVD builder application, when I preview the same kind of video
transitions as below, the computer jumps to full screen mode and plays the
video, BUT, pressing the ESC key takes me back to the desktop. In WMM, I get
the problem described below, ie jumps to full screen and must use the Remote
to switch to Media Center, then Exit to get back to the desktop.

Also, I just installed Adobe Premier Elements and I do not have this problem
with that program in that I can preview the video clips in its preview window
and it stays there within the Adobe program and doesn't switch to full screen
mode.

Ergo: There is a Major bug between WMM and MC 2004. How do I get Microsoft's
attention on this problem, anybody know?

Well - The bad news is that you are quickly moving beyond my realm of
expertise....

I can tell you the following:
1. The fact that you can reproduce the problem in Graphedit means that
the root cause of the bug isn't in Movie Maker code. Any Direct Show-based
application (Movie Maker and some Roxio products included) are probably
going to experience the bug you are hitting. (I don't want to imply that
Movie Maker has no responsibility here! When things go wrong, Movie Maker
should handle them gracefully, and that's obviously not the case here.)
2. The bug may not have anything to do with your MCE software, either.
From chatting with the MCE guys, when you hit that green arrow button on
your remote, you are launching the MCE user interface, which steals back all
the render surfaces (including the one that's currently full screen). It's a
clever way to get out of the bug, but it probably isn't related to the
reproducibility of the bug.
3. The problem does not appear to be the work of some sneaky third-party
DShow filter. From your description of the graph you built, it sounds like
all the normal components are present, and nothing additional is being
pulled into the graph.

At this stage, I'd start looking at your video graphic's card software and
drivers. Someone here suggested that you might have a "home theatre" mode
that's overly ambitious :)

If you can send me a dxdiag of you your system, I'll add it to the issue
for tracking, and try to use it to set up a repro in-house.

Hope this helps!

Unfortunately, MS won't sell me Media Center 2005 and Gateway
pleads
ignorance of upgrades for that version, so far.
Any other ideas?

:

Look at the codecs and turn any that might be interfering off,
it's
on
a
new
tab in the options window.

I want to use WMM to edit and create a movie. I use a Media
Center
2004 PC
from Gateway (901X).
Problem: When I open WMM and load a video file (or clip) and
then
try
to
preview the video clip in the preview window, also when the
video
clip
is
placed on the timeline or storyboard, the computer jumps
immediately
to a
full screen mode, as if I am viewing a DVD movie file using
Media
Center,
and
I can't back out or stop that process.

So, I lose all control buttons etc., and can't really edit
the
video.
It
does this every time I start WMM. I'm using the latest
version.

How can I fix this?
Thanks
