Hi,

I need some help, I transfered my movie from my video camera to my computer,
everything went well. I made my video...I saved my project..when I went back
the next day to view my video cause I had some editing to do...I opened it
and it's a black screen when I click on play...at the timeline it shows big
red X I don't understand what happened to my video. I hope I don't have to
redo it.
Please let me know if there is a way of getting it back.
Thanks

Define: 'it'. Did you attempt to open the video itself, or the 'project'
file (mswmm)
and it's a black screen when I click
on play...at the timeline it shows big red X I don't understand what
happened to my video.

I'm guessing you SAVED the completed video to a different location on your
machine.

In any case, you aren't looking for the saved video, you're looking for the
project (mswmm) file if your intent is to edit it further.

That's not saying you can't edit further by using the completed video. But
you would have to locate the completed video and IMPORT it back into WMM to
do so.
I hope I don't have to redo it.

If you've saved the mswmm PROJECT file, all you should need to do is locate
it, and open it with WMM
Please let me know if there is a way of getting it back.

Start>Search>All FIles and Folders> Under "all or part of the file name"
type mswmm. IF you saved the project, it'll show up in the right-hand panel
and tell you where it is on your machine.

Welcome. Good luck.

You saved the 'project' that creates a .mswmm
file that only records the path to your source files.
If the source files are moved, deleted or otherwise
unavailable...you will see Red Xs.

In addition to creating a .mswmm file that can be
used for future editing...it's a good idea to 'Save
Movie File' (Publish in Vista) in the .wmv or .avi
format. Thisw creates a movie file that can be
played on any system with WMP or other players.

I located it, I tryed to open it and it gives me an error message error 2048
couldn't open the file because it is not a file that quicktime understands.
Can you please tell me why some of my videos are saved in folders and some
are as quicktime?

Again. Define "it". What's the file name? Sounds to me like you're trying
to open the finished movie, and not the project file.
I tryed to open it and it gives me an error message
error 2048 couldn't open the file because it is not a file that
quicktime understands.

Quicktime is a Mac-based video player that only *needs* to be associated
with .mov files, but WILL try to be the first to open EVERYTHING if you let
it.
Can you please tell me why some of my videos
are saved in folders and some are as quicktime?

Sounds like your file associations are messed up. As I said, Quicktime is
only *really* needed to view movies saved as .mov files on a PC.

WMM does not support .mov.

Before I go any further, please relay the *exact* name of the file you refer
to up above as "it".

Examples:

vacation.wmv, vacation.avi, vacation.mswmm, untitled.mswmm

I go to WMM open project select my file to open it's a WSWMM file but it's a
quicktime icon?

According to http://filext.com/file-extension/wswmm there is no such thing
as a wswmm file extension. Did you mean to write mswmm?
but it has a quicktime icon?

The icon should have nothing to do with it unless Quicktime has added the
..mov extension to the file without your knowledge.

Try this:

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types> (scoll down the
alphabetical list until you come to mswmm) Click on MSW and look to the
right. It should say "Windows Movie Maker File" On the bottom, in the,
"Opens With" box, it SHOULD say Windows Movie Maker. IF it does NOT, Hit
the "Change" button and reassociate MSWMM with WMM.

Good luck

Sorry i'm a little new with this....Ok so when finished working with a
project I save as a project is that correct? Publish is to brun to dvd, email
etc...I will start my project again and see what happens....
I have another question I want to save my videos and clips that I have
imported, I've created a folder but when I copy the clip to paste into the
folder the pasting doesn't work? Can you please let me know how that works?

===================
Sorry but you lost me.

Lets try again.

Save 'project' creates a .mswmm file
that is used for re-editing. This file
will not work unless the source files
are still available in the original locations.

(Your video clips, pictures, music files
should already be saved on your hard
drive before you import them into Movie
Maker. Just leave them as it and movie
maker can find them when you reopen
the project file)

Save Movie File or (Publish in vista)
creates a .wmv or ,avi Movie file that can
be played on any computer that has WMP
or other media players.

To burn a DVD you need DVD Authoring
software.that requires that the saved Movie
file be imported into the authoring software.

On Vista...if you have Windows DVD Maker
you can use that.

The media is not actually imported...as I
have been trying to tell you Movie Maker
only records the path to the original location.

It's quite clear that we are not communicating.

Try going to PapaJohn's site and read the
section called: Manage Your Files.

Maybe your answer is in there.

If what you're saying is that you try to copy clips from the project
storyboard/timeline and paste them into a collection folder.... that doesn't
work.

Project clips are independent of those in collections... both are links to
the same source files. It can be a bit confusing until you learn a bit about
Movie Maker.

If that's not what you're saying, try re-phrasing it again.

Ohhhhhh. I think I get it now. Scorpio is using WMM Vista-style, and I was
answering XP-style taking into account the name of this newsgroup.

So "Publish" in Vista = "Save" in XP? Is that correct? (I don't use Vista)
