Hello,

I have been using MM for about... well, say 18 months at least , and I
hardly had problems with it... so, I hope someone of you can help me with
this problem fast. It would be so great.
The actual problem:
I start MM (2.1), and then I select one media file from one of my
collections. Now, you should be able to preview it in this window at the
right margin, but it doesn't work.
All the buttons there (playback, stop, fast forward, take snapshots etc.)
are grey / disabled, I can't click them. It also doesn't help to drag the
media file into the storyboard or the timeline. Just nothing happens when I
click on the small playback button left above the storyboard/timeline.

I have been reading lots of FAQs and that stuff about MM now, and I came to
the conclusion, that it shouldn't be a codec problem. I can say this, because
I disabled all the codecs in the Options, and also, if it would be a problem
of a video codec, I would still be able to listen to audio - or at least to
watch still images.
I also tried re-installing WMM 2.1, but I wasn't successful, because I
couldn't find a download where I would have to re-install SP2, and
re-installing a previous version (VMM 2.0) doesn't have any effect.

Now, it would be great if someone could supply some help for me.

Kind of sounds like all of them to me.
igiwo how about trying a System Restore, since it apparently worked
recently, back to when it was working. This way you don't need to worry
about uninstalling and reinstalling SP2.
(I really wish Microsoft would come out with a stand alone installation of
MM2 this installation problem is happening too often)

Indeed, like Wojo pointed out, no sort of media works. No video, no audio, no
stills.
Therefore, I don't believe that it's a codec error, so I thought, it could
be Movie Maker's very own fault... But I think that's even not it:
Somewhere on my PC I found some self-extracting archive for the installation
of Windows Movie Maker 2.0, but it didn't replace anything, and when I start
the moviemk.exe in my Movie Maker directory, in the Info dialog it says some
2.1 version.
Also, MM 2.1 works fine on my brother's pc, so he sent the complete Movie
Maker folder to, and I replaced my folder completely. It still doesn't
work... so... I don't even think the problem is with the moviemk.exe...

.... unfortunately, I don't have a System Restore point, as I never made
one... too bad for me... The only one is from yesterday, and the problem
occurs since yesterday. It also hasn't vanished today.

Am I doomed forever?
