I saw this mentioned on Papa John's site. Sounds like a major improvement,
to solve crashes due to codec conflicts within the program, without having
to rename codecs manually or with a 3rd party program.

Is there a URL from which one can download this version? Or is it only
available on the SP2 CD?

I looked on the Microsoft web site, and did not see it mentioned.

Yes, I found the link for downloading the SP2 Beta, and I think it was 256
MB in size, which would be verrrry sllllooww on my dial-up connection. I
wouldn't be interested in installing the whole SP2 Beta pack now anyhow. But
if I could just install the MM 2.1 Beta, I might like to just install that!

Can one get the pack on CD? And with the CD, could one just install the new
MM 2.1, without installing the whole SP2?

Yes you can. That's what I did last week.... downloaded the latest full SP2
beta package and updated my MM2.1 beta files without installing the full SP2
package.

It's not for the casual Movie Maker user.... see the Setup > Software page
of my site..... take the link to the MM2.1 beta page for info about the
files themselves.

I think that is where I heard about this new version, on your site.

Why would you not recommend it for everyone? Have you found any new problems
with it, that are not in the earlier version? From the description I read on
your site (although I might have missed something), it sounds more stable,
less crash-prone than 2.0. So, although it might not yet be the final 2.1,
it still would probably be better for anyone than the current stable
release, 2.0, no?

I'm not saying it's more stable and less crash-prone than 2.0. It has a
built in tool to help manage the issues, but the issues are probably the
same.... beta software is usually less stable and more crash-prone....

Even though I have the beta of 2.1, I don't use it for my normal
productions.... version 2.0 works fine for my needs. I just test 2.1 over to
the side. But when SP2 is finally released, I'll be installing it and going
to the new version for normal use.

If someone has the computer/MM2 skills to extract and install only the MM2.1
files from the package, then they don't need it because they have the skills
to more easily solve their MM2 issues without it.
