WMI will not start

running XP with SP2. WMI is set to "automatic" in services but it does not
start. In services, if I try to click "start" the following error displays:
"Could not start the Windows Management Instrumentation sevice on local
computer - Error 998 Invalid access to memory location."
This causes huge problems since my home network does not work, Files and
Printers can not be shared, Windows Security Service will not run, etc. etc.
It seems that many important functions rely heavily on the WMI service.
I have tried almost every suggestionion on the web, such as reregistering
five suggested dlls. I do not have restore points that go back far enough.
I assume the answer is to uninstall and reinstall SP2 but I don't know how to
do that.
Any suggestions?
