I don't think you'll get thumbnails for anything but JPEG, TIFF, or PNG in
Vista. Maybe RAW if you can get the right codec from the camera manufactuer
because there's a bunch of different RAW file formats. But I think the
oldies like WMF, EMF and such are off the list.

I'm working from distant memory here so I could be wrong. Search Help and
Support for "thumbnails" or "thumbnail file types" to verify. Or maybe
someone who has worked with that recently will reply.

With Windows XP .wmf and .emf files were thumbnailed in folders. When I opened
the containing folder I could see a thumbnail preview. I cannot thumbnail these
extensions in Vista. Is there a setting I am missing?

It would appear that Vista will only see these file types in Photo Gallery,
and I would imagine that the same restriction is true of thumbnail viewing..
quite frustrating, huh..

Photo Gallery will show pictures and videos with any of these file types:

a.. BMP JPEG JFIF TIFF PNG WDP ASF AVI MPEG WMV
