Microsoft has asked me to distribute this ASAP to any and all
potentially effected by the WMF vulnerability issue, since it is making
the rounds now and the patch has become available sooner than originally
anticipated.

You can find information and patch downloads at the following url:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-001.mspx

Although this issue effects all WIN OSs, a patch is not being offered
for WIN 98, 98SE or ME since this particular matter is not considered
critical enough to justify it.

However, be aware that most virus protection software has released some
type of definition to deal with the WMF issue, so even if you cannot
have your OS patched, if you have an older WIN OS, be sure to keep your
Virus Definitions up to date.

MICROSOFT PUBLICALLY ANNOUNCE THAT THEY DO NOT SEND OUT FIXES VIA EMAIL,
NEWSGROUPS OR BY ANY OTHER MEANS THAN WINDOWS UPDATE OR BY A USER GOING
DIRECTLY TO THEIR SITE AND NOT BY A LINK FROM ANYWHERE.

THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL MICROSOFT WAY OF DOING THINGS. AS A MATTER OF
FACT YOU CANNOT EVEN BE SURE WHO IS WRITING THIS OR ANYTHING ELSE FOR
THAT MATTER.

Great - expect virus and Trojan writers to have a fieldday in the coming
weeks.

Microsoft hasn't sent out the 'fix' at all. Art has simply informed users
of this newsgroup that the fix is available and he included a link to
Microsoft's site.

Switch your brain cell on, would you?

Not likely.

A number of people have tried, totally unsuccessfully, to actually
infect a Windows 98 or Windows Me system with the known exploits for
this vulnerability.

And there are not enough users still running the older versions of
Windows to make them a worthwhile target. Much better results from
looking for another hole in Windows XP/2000 or maybe taking a shot at
Linux or Mac.

ART WAS ALREADY SPOOFED IN THIS NG SO YOU NEVER KNOW ABOUT A LINK.

They have been. Every time I surf porn, I am asked to process a wmf file.
Fortunately, I surf porn on my Linux box.

Jon it's far to complicated for that idiot moron meashershithead to
figure out that by simply holding the cursor over the link anyone with
one brain cell (an amoeba?) could ascertain that the link was a genuine
ms link.
What a loser he is!

I received the automatic Microsoft security update file for WindowsXP
(KB912919) this morning.

Yes the patch is so critical that Microsoft has
put this patch out ahead of their usual sluggish
schedule. Well, what could you expect when merely
viewing a picture can infect your computer.

And, asking people to spread the information (like
Arthur is doing) is not the same as sending out a
message that purports to be from Microsoft. Don't
like Arthur's Link, then hit your own button to
update from Microsoft.

This vulnerability has already been well publicized and, in fact, has
already had methods of exploit released, so you are way behind the eight
ball on this, I'm afraid.

I am not here to be an apologist for MS, but they don't always do things
badly, and they are attempting to resolve these issues as they come to
their attention.

Your response was expected from someone here, BTW. and your pseudonym
may be more prophetic than my recent posting ;-)

Glad the system is working through the notices.

No notice; it just came sailing into my computer with the greatest of
ease without me doing anything. When a pop-up said the file was ready to
install I went to "custom" installation and checked what it wanted to
update. And it was the WMF vulnerability thingy. I said go ahead. Thank
you very much.
