I've copied some music off CDs onto the computer, but
they turned out in AWM format, when I wanted them to come
out as MP3, to put them on an MP3 player. I downloaded a
converter program, but when I converted them to MP3, they
generally turned out 2 or 3 times the size of what they
were as AWM-most were about 1.5mb and came out as 3-5mb.
Is there any way to convert them without making them so
big?

Yep, lower the bitrate. That will make the music sound horrible. WMA
produces lower file sizes while keeping better audio quality then MP3.

Have you checked to see if your portable music "mp3" player can play WMA?
WMA have much superior quality/size ratio then mp3. Most "mp3" players play
WMA too.

Several things you can do: Try converting them at a lower
bitrate (chances are it converted at maximum bitrate at
around 320kb), somewhere around 128-256kbps. I find that
256 sounds very nice, but 128 is rather dull sounding if
you have a player that has nice sound quality. If the
sizes are still too large, convert them to WMA format,
which are even smaller. A WMA file is about half the
size of an MP3 at the same bitrate
