WM using 96% of 4GB of memory?

Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit / 4GB RAM

I'm using Windows Mail only as a news reader, for groups like this one (no
graphics, no mail). WM uses 96% of my 4GB of memory and literally drags my
computer to a halt. At the moment, with no other programs open, WM and Vista
are using 78%. If I close WM, usage drops to about 11%. I have subscribed to
a bunch of NG's, but this was never a problem in Outlook Express on my XP
machine. What's going on here? Your help is appreciated - Thanks, IM

Are all your fxes up to date?

Which Antivirus are you using?
 
Julian - Yes on the updates, Vista, software, drivers, and etcetera, and I'm
using Avast antivirus - IM

And you have the email scanning component omitted?

I can't think of anything else.
