with XP do you still require a router.

I have an ethernet modem and a dsl connection. I can use a bridge and cross
over cable to connect the desktop and the laptop(running win 98). If I
bought a hud could the laptop see the internet via the connectioon on the
desktop with XP.

Alternatively would I need to connect both via a router, to form a lan where
both could access the web.?

The modem only has one port.
