Does the key work for both 32 & 64bit editions like retail does?

Ken

Ken,

The OEM product only comes as either the 32-bit or 64-bit version
either preinstalled or purchased.
So your question is moot - you receive a key with the version you
purchase, do not get both versions and if you wished to switch you
would purchase a new copy of the other version which would come with a
new key.

Hi Mike,

Perhaps Ken is thinking that he can purchase the OEM system with x86, then
borrow a copy of x64 and install using the key supplied with the OEM system.

Hi Rick, Well you know what comes next.
Then he would be in breach of license since he only bought an OEM
license for the x86 version etc.

I am assuming that one can purchase an OEM copy of the Operating System to
be installed on your home built "White Box", not a store bought PC with an
OEM version of windows pre-installed.

That changes Ken's question somewhat.
That may not be where Ken was headed, but it is a legitimate question just
the same.
When you purchase an OEM copy of the O/S are both X86 and X64 versions
included like when we got the RC1, RC2 from Microsoft?

Hi Mike,

Does it? With the retail I understand the full version of either will work
and are available to the consumer. Is the OEM license restricted to just
x86? I haven't seen documentation one way or another, so honestly do not
know. I do recall that XP offered users upgrades to x64 at no cost at one
point.

More importantly though, will this technically work? I mean, licensing
aside, can the OEM key be used to install x64 provided it is the same
version as the one that comes with the system?

Well, the OEM products (white box) are still either x86 or x64 - not
both. And since the OEM install is tied to the first machine
installed to as a "one time use" license I'm not really sure this
changes anything (?).

OEM and retail keys are not interchangeable. He could not use the OEM pk
with a retail dvd.

Hi Colin,

That's not what I meant. I know they're not interchangeable. What I was
stating/asking is that the retail key will work with either x86 or x64, but
will an OEM key do the same? Obviously, there is a media type issue involved
here as well, but I was more curious about any limitations on OEM keys.

I don't know of any way to determine that until OEM Vista goes on sale in
places like NewEgg. Even Darrel wouldn't have an OEM key to play with.

Yes it may be tied to the one machine but if the one key works for both
theres no reason you cant swap to the 64 bit later on and re activate no
prob.

I actually reactivated a copy of xp pro oem yesterday after i upgraded. I
swapped motherboard, cpu, gpu, memory and hard drive and to my surprise it
re activated like a new copy.

Ken

OEM copies are for installation on a new computer (no OS), not installation
to replace the existing OS on a computer, whether on a new or reformatted
hard drive. Just because you can do it from a technical standpoint doens't
mean that the software will be provided that way. If you want OEM x86 and
OEM x64 you have to buy two OEM copies. The software is provided in the
format for its intended use, not its possible use.

No reason for it not to activate on an upgraded computer.
