I have a wireless network (802.11B) set up between two
computers in my house. They are both running windows xp.
Computer 1 has an ethernet network card in it. It has a
cable going from it to the router on the back of the
Lynkys 4 port router/AP. There is another cable going
from the internet WAN prot on the back of the router/AP
to the DSL outlet on the wall.

On computet 2 I have a Linksys USB wireless adapter
hooled up to it. Right now I have internet on both
computers. I want to be able to access the files and
printers on both computers from one another. They are on
the same workgroup and I searched for computers on the
network and typed in the other computer's name but it
didn't find it. How do I do this.

Thanks!!!

In addition to

- are the workgroups the same name
- do you run the same protocols
- if TCPIP is the protocol (which it should be) is the addressing the same
(e.g. 192.168.1.x)

Yes, I am on the same workgroup, file and printer sharing
is on on both computers, they both have the same protocol
(TCP/IP) and they are set to obtain an IP adress
automaticlly

I'm not aure. How do i figure out the hostname and Ip
address of either computer? and how do I ping them?

I had the exact same setup, and the exact same problem. I
discovered that the problem in sharing files was due to
the firewall software (ZoneAlarm) on my two computers, and
nothing to do with XP or the Linksys router. To get file
sharing to work I had to configure ZoneAlarm on each
machine to place the range of allowable Linksys DHCP
addresses in the "trusted" zone. Once I did this, file
sharing has worked great.

Good luck.

Here are two ways of finding out what IP addresses your computers are holding.

(1) In your Network Connections folder (right click on My Network places; choose properties), right-click on your Adapter (local or USB wireless). Select Status; then click on the Support tab. There you will see what IP address the adapter is currently holding, how it got that address (Automatic Private, DHCP, Manual, or Alternate Manual), subnet mask, and Default Gateway. If your computers are set to obtain an address automatically, and everything is working well, you should see DHCP. The repair button that is in that window can work as sort of a shortcut DHCP release-and-renew function.

Or

(2) Click Start; Run; type "cmd" and hit enter to open up a command prompt. Type ipconfig/all. This will show you the same info in a bit more detail. To refresh your DHCP address from here, it is a two step process. Simply type ipconfig/release (you should get a message saying that the adapter has been successfully released). Then type ipconfig/renew. It may take a few seconds, but a new address (which could still be the same one) will appear.
