Hi,

Can I mix wireless components from different manufacturers ? for example,
buy a router from NetGear, a PCMCIA from D-LINK and a PCI card from someone
else ? are they compatible ?

I wish to ask also what the difference between a Router and a Access Point.

Thanks

In theory yes. There are subtle incompatibilities sometimes. Also try to
keep them to the same standard. There are 3 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g.
g is the newest and fastest, and has some backwards compatibility with b.

An access point connects a wireless network to a wired network. A router
routes several local computers/IP addresses through a single
address/connection to the internet (greatly simplified). A wireless router
combines an access point with a regular router.

WiFi Alliance certifies interoperable products and lists them here:
http://www.wi-fi.org/OpenSection/certified_products.asp?TID=2
Others may be compatible but haven't been certified yet.

Access point links wired and wireless devices on the same network.
Router links 2 different networks (ex. internet and local).

Then, if I want a wireless local network with independent access to
internet, I must buy :

Wireless Access Point + Router + PCMCIA Card + PCI Card

I only have 2 computers - a Desktop and a Notebook - and at this moment I
have a cross-over wired connection

Thanks

If I want a wireless connection only between 2 computers, with independent
access to internet, I don't need a Access Point ? a Wireless Router is
enough ? I'm confused with this, don't know what I must buy.

Yes. You can get wireless routers (access point and router in one box).

A wireless router has an access point built in.

Can you get wireless routers that act as both an access point and a router
for both wireless and wired internal and external networks? I.E., if I
wanted to connect 2 wired machines and 1 wireless could I just buy a
wireless router and 1 wireless PCI card to connect all internal devices
together and share the external (internet) access?
