Hi,
I have a problem with my wireless connection... I have a compaq and Dell610
on XP that works well using Wireless + WPA PSK, I recently bought an ASUS
and I have only been able to connect twice wirelessly for about 3-4 hours. I
have not been able to replicate this for the last 5 days.

Detailed roblem Description
Unable to connect to Wireless Router using WPA-PSK

I removed the security settings on the router and was able to connect.

Router:
Zyxel 2602HWL ZyNOS F/W Version: V3.40(ADF.1) | 07/12/2005
DSL FW Version:TI AR7 03.02.06.00

There are no upgrades available for the router

I upgraded the driver of the wireless adaptor on my laptop
Adpator:
Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Driver
11.5.0.32

-> No resolution

I added the following dword to the registry setting for the Wireless
interface:
DhcpConnEnableBcastFlagToggle and set it to 1

on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{6CDF7184-DFB0-4421-AC85-DE0376292520}

-> NO resolution.

I tried using WEP and 802.1x encryption and could not connect. I think since
this methods are less secure, MS has decided not to support it on Vista.

I would appreciate your help with this.

If this is not the right forum for this question, please advise and provide
alternatives if possible. Thank You in advance.

can you post the text output of ipconfig /all from the computer that
is having the issue?

Hi
If your new laptop is running Vista, and the Zyxel is from 2005 it might
have compatibility problems with Vista call Zyxel support.

Hi,
Thanks for your prompt reply.

Here is the system info for the router... It is from 2005! I got it a year ago

System Name:
ZyNOS F/W Version: V3.40(ADF.1) | 07/12/2005
DSL FW Version:TI AR7 03.02.06.00
Standard:ADSL_G.dmt

I need to see this with the wired Lan disabled and the wireless
enabled to see if you are even getting an IP. Make sure you have the
latest driver for the Intel wireless card. I'd definitely unbind
IPv6 from the wireless:
http://digitalmediaphile.wordpress.com/ipv6-how-to-unbind-from-a-nic-in-windows-vista/

As Jack said, old firmware in the router is a probably issue. You
posted that the firmware was from 2005. You need to see if there is
new, Vista compatible firmware. If the info above and new firmware
do not fix your issue, you may need to replace the 2005 device with
one that is certified to work with Vista.

Thank You for your prompt reply...

Will let you know if I succeed. checking with my ISP, Zyxel support(no
response yet!), and this forum. I read someone found a firmware upgrade for
router that fixes the problem but the link does not work anymore. It was on
Zyxel germany.

Barb

On my Zyxel router no support for WPA2 or AES. It's either WEP (which does
work) or WPA-TKIP (which worked in the past but doesn't now).

Barb,

WPA2 or AES is not supported on my router.

I tried WPA without PSK and it worked a couple of times, connecting and
disconnecting, but eventually it went back to bad.

I found an error logged on the system everytime it fails. It is an ".etl"
file, I can not view it. Would it be useful to check ? Should I post it to
you? How?

On another note...

I accessed the wireless adaptor properties and found on the advanced tab a
parameter to select the channel to transmit adhoc. I changed it to 7 to
match my router, but when I run "netsh wlan show all" on vista it was using
channel 6, the strength detected was 15%. I changed it to 8 and showed on 7
and strenght of signal detected went to 99%.

All this interesting but no solution to the problem. After this change, I
can still connect without security and backed out the settings to default and
made my router match vista's channel.

Still no success.

Thanks

time to replace the router..

Thanks

On my Zyxel router no support for WPA2 or AES. It's either WEP (which does
work) or WPA-TKIP (which worked in the past but doesn't now).

can you try WPA2 or WPA-AES?
It seems to be a feature of these failing systems that the router only
offers WPA-TKIP. WEP works, and I suspect WPA-AES will work too - I
shall have a chance to test this hypothesis on Friday. I have tried
most of the superstitious fixes and a few speculative ones with latest
drivers and a couple of promising looking hotfixes but to no avail.

My old 3com 3CRWDR-100A router (latest firmware) has exactly the same
problem with my Tosh portable on Vista using Intel 3945ABG wireless
chipset and latest drivers. If anything it was marginally better out
of the box (connected about 1 in 20 attempts) now down to less than 1
in 100. Hard to say which of MS or 3Com are to blame but I have seen
enough other posts complaining about this combination to be convinced
that something is badly wrong.

The fault reported in the deep diagnostics is timeout waiting for the
server to send the secondary keys. Sometimes (very rarely) it works OK
and the connection is stable with excellent signal to noise. Suspend
is almost always fatal to the connection even with do not power down
WiFi to save power ticked.

Thanks for your help...

I got an answer from Zyxel... The version of software appears to be a
customised version made for TPG.

TPG does not have an updated version of the firmware. The only options left:
1- Upgrade to the official version provided by Zyxel, taking the risk that
it might not be compatible with TPG's network.
2- Buy a new router
3- Go back to XP

Thanks.

what driver version?

At present I think I have the latest according to Intels site but if
anything they are even worse :(

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...32-bit+version&lang=eng&strOSs=153&submit=Go!
(generic versions at the above)

Currently the copy loaded (and not working at all) is

NETw4v32.sys 11.5.0.32 dated 26/09/2007 13:12, 2,251,776 bytes
NETw4c32.dll 11.5.0.0
NETw4r32.dll 11.5.0.0

And also the Toshiba customised ones from the website below (same
version nos)
http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/wlan/?page=downloads
(these are evidently customised to work with Toshiba portables and
people using the generic Intel ones have apparently run into trouble
in the past - particularly when SP1 came out)

I have tried in addition the only hotfix, 935222 that looked even
vaguely relevant (although it was actually for WPA with AES encryption
I thought it was worth a punt). The system would work sometimes and if
it connected would be stable until suspend/WiFi power down. Upgrading
to the latest Intel 3945 drivers if anything made it worse.

There seems to be a distinct shortage of info in the knowledge base
about these issues despite there being plenty of folk banging their
heads against this particular Vista brick wall. The 3Com 3CWDR100A is
on the latest firmware available 2.06T13 dated Apr 25 2007 (so not
really very recent). No mention of Vista WiFi woes on their website :(

A search on this router model number finds someone else reporting the
exact same symptoms with a Sony portable.

Thanks for your interest. Any suggestions on what to try next
appreciated. I have run out of ideas.

Martin Brown
