Wireless Printing

This may not be the correct forum for this question ...so apologies in
advance if not!

All I want to do is use my Samsung X10 laptop with XP to connect to the
Internet (via dialup) without having to connect to normal wire. I also want
to be able to print to my printer without having to use the cable too.

Can anyone tell me in simple language if it is possible and how to do it?
Maybe there is a good 'how to' site somewhere?

I know it must be possible and simple but Im damned if I can find any
articles on the subject. By the way I am not trying to create any sort of
network. I only have one laptop!!!

Yes, it is possible. But, you *will* be making a network, between the
laptop and the wireless access point. that's how wireless works.

Sorry, I'm not aware of any articles for this particular configuration.

The complexity here is that you want to use dialup and the Wireless
Access Points (WAP) units normally on sale assumes a broadband
connection, not dialup. I looked at LInksys and Netgear sites and can't
spot a WAP that also manages the dialup connection. Surely this could
be possible as these WAPs are in principle computers with an embedded OS
(Linksys uses Linux in the recent models, I understand). Maybe look
harder and you can find such a box.

So you'll have to probably get a desktop machine setup as the "dialer"
to the Internet and make that the "default" gateway. You would share
the network connection. This box presumably would be an XP machine (but
you could also use Linux if you were so inclined). You would make an
ethernet network connection between this desktop to the WAP (from
Linksys, Netgear, etc.). If you don't get a WAP that also provides
printer server services, attach the printer to this computer. Share the
printer to network users (on the laptop). Configure the WAP to provide
secure wireless access to the laptop.

I can see how all this would work. I haven't done it. It would be an
intersting afternoon project. Sorry, I don't know of any articles where
this discussed. Find someone who knows some of this technology and
invite them over for the afternoon to setup. Read more at Linksys's and
Netgear's web site where they have good articles. However, the dial-up
part is the bit that probably is not discussed simply becuase it appears
they don't sell gear for this.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Many thanks for the explanation. It seems as though it will be difficult to
connnect my laptop to a dialup connection. This is not really so much of a
problem as printing wirelessly is probably more important to me. As I
understand it I just buy a wireless router?

Yea, I guess it would work. Get a wireless access point that has print
server capability built in. My recollection Netgear has a good selection
of these. Can't say that I've tried it, but I can't think why it won't
work. Not a conventional thing to do, so you'll have to probably
"interpret" the instructions.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
