I want to be able to send the presentation from my laptop to the projector -
wirelessly.

Laptop has built-in wireless capability, as does the projector (NEC NP1000).
It uses IEEE802.11b/g technology.

So - do I need a working wireless network in the worksite for this to
work? (Because our LAN is wired and we have no wireless network here.) Or
does the laptop & projector make their own network regardless of where they
may be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bob

It would be nice if everything was plug and play, wouldn't it? Sorry Bob,
there is a bit more to it.

If, and these are no small ifs, the projector and laptop both use the same
wireless technology (which they probably do) and they have both been
configured to allow ad-hoc networking, and if they have been set-up to look
for each other, then your laptop can communicate with your projector.
However, most projectors that have wireless communication have this feature
turned off by default (imagine if you booting your computer took over
someone else's slideshow).

I would suggest looking at the manufacturer's web-site and user's manual on
the steps to activate this feature. Also, check if your computer has had
the ad-hoc networking set-up.

I have seen mixed reviews on wireless communication with projectors. Some I
hear work flawlessly, while others loss the connection frequently. I do not
know what the situation will be with yours.

Whenever I do a show, I need to feel confident that things will work.
Therefore I prefer to use hard-wired connections even if the cords run a bit
long.

Bill,

On this same subject. Is it possible to run "presenter mode" over a
wireless link. Assume we are currently running Presenter Mode over a hard
wire link.

Thanks.

Rex

I am not a big fan of wireless projectors, as I hinted at earlier. I also
use a custom built presenter's mode, so I do not rely on Presenter's View.
Because of this, I do not have any projectors setup to test this on at this
time. Perhaps someone with more experience in wireless projectors could
better answer the question.

Thanks Bill,

Given that your's is the only answer so far it suggests that there just
isn't anybody with the experience to answer.
Part of the reason for my interest in wireless is that we have one cable run
of about 40 metres. I am concerned about loss of signal strength over that
distance.
