Wireless NIC Problem

I just got an older computer running with an AMD K-6 500 MHz. The
network card that came with the computer was connected via PCI and had
a little wire that ran directly to the motherboard. I've never seen
this before. When I tried to swap it with my Wi-Fi PCI card the
computer wouldn't boot. When I take it out though it works fine. Any
ideas on whats going on?

Wake-on-lan cable, older boards didn't have fully
implemented PCI event wake up so a cable was used if the
feature was desired- most people don't use it and the cable
is not needed in that case.

Wifi card isn't compatible, or is damaged.
