a friend of mine is asking me for help setting up a wireless network, she
wants to share files and a dial up internet connection with her new laptop.
the network would just be a dell dimension tower connecting to the internet
through it's internal PCI modem and a compaq 2598us laptop with integrated
802.11g wireless. i've built a bunch of computers but have very little
experience with networking and none at all with wireless networks.
everything i can find online seems to be much more than she needs and it all
refers to sharing dsl or cable connections, no dial up. what's the simplest
way to wirelessly network these 2 systems? maybe this is a stupid question,
doesn't seem to me like it would work but i don't know, can it be done by
just adding a wireless network card to the dell or for a wireless network
must you have a router or access point or whatever even if you're only
connecting 2 computers?

The simplest, equipmentwise, would have the desktop be a proxy server,
dial up the internet and allow any other computer to share that
connection over ethernet, which you plug a WAP into the desktop's
ethernet to get wireless.

Simpest to configutre, would be to get a Wireless router that supports
a dial-up back up. You need a modem for that. You will distribute that
to your systems, either with wires or wireless.

I think adding a wireless card to the desktop would work. Get that
installed then run the Internet Connection Sharing and you should be set.
When it is setup correctly, the laptop should cause the desktop to dial the
connection whenever it needs internet access. Check out this site for some
helpful information, and of course lots of ads for network related
equipment...

This will work fine. Run the "Setup Home or Small Office Network Wizard" on
both PCs. If one of the PCs is Win98 you can run the Wizard from a WinXP CD.

I always set the 2nd PC to NOT automatically dial in when data is needed.
Better to do it manually. Right click the connection and set it to show an
icon in the tray. Then you can dial in or hang up by right clicking the
icon.

Be sure to enable the firewall on the gateway computer's dialup connection
or use a 3rd party one.

"ad hoc". that was the missing piece of the puzzle. i don't know how many
sites and how many pages i looked through with absolutely no mention of ad
hoc mode for wireless network cards and i always just assumed a router or
access point was required for a wireless network.
