Hi

I have a new sony vaio with wireless capability and xp
home editoin - I can connect to my wireless router at home
and get on the internet no problem, but when I go anywhere
else that has a wireless facility my machine which ought
to pick it up automatically does not seem to allow me
online. It can see the network but I cannot access the
internet through it.

I understand that windows 2000 used to work beautifully
with wireless capability anywhere in the world without
having to change any settings - it just picked it up
automatically and one could get online without problems.
Someone suggested that the problem may be that I have xp
home and not xp business edition. Does anyone know if
this is true? Or have any suggestions please?

Sandie

Hi Sandie,

XP works with wireless much much better than any previous version of
Windows. There wouldn't be a difference in wireless capabilities between XP
Home and XP Pro.

As to connecting to other networks, are you sure that you are actually
connected to the remote networks (able to connect to machines inside that
network)?

Also check in Internet Explorer under Tools | Options, the connections tab,
LAN Settings button that you are not using a proxy server while you are
attempting to browse the net on the remote networks.

I have a wireless USB adapter on my dell pent II w/ xp pro. the wireless adapter is finding the access point fine, with good signal strength, but is unable to ping the IP address, DNS server. When I open available networks, the zero configuration utility does show the "Wireless" tab. My other dell pent II w/ xp pro has the "wireless" tab.

I've tried different adapters, so I have a number older wireless connections that show up under managing services.
