An XP Pro machine with a USB wireless networking adaptor doesn't
autostart at bootup. The adaptor is recognised, but is shown on the
taskbar with a red cross as unavailable. It can be made to work by
either unplugging and reconnecting, or by disabling and re-enabling in
Network Connections. This is a problem when rebooting the machine
remotely (with VNC remote-control software), or trying to connect to a
domain.
I recently discovered that the ASPI32 service was not installed
correctly (though SCSI CD-ROM drives worked fine), so installed the
Adaptec (not Microsoft) drivers for the Adaptec 2940U2W card. While this
doesn't seem related with USB, the wireless connection started working
properly, connecting as soon as the machine was booted. I then
uninstalled and reinstalled UltraVNC (again apparently unrelated), and
wireless networking no longer started automatically.
Is this a known problem, and are there ways to solve it?
BTW, the USB wireless adaptor itself is unbranded, and is using the
drivers supplied with it. It is marked with an FCC ID, PQP-WU221P-X
which corresponds with Atmel IWE100-U2041; however it appears not to
work with updated drivers for this model. It does work with drivers for
Atmel IWE100-U4030, which has a different FCC ID. After experimenting
with drivers and finding no improvement, I reverted to those supplied
with the device.
Best wishes,
