I recently installed Siemens Speedstream wireless router and adapter cards
in two machines. One machine is cabled to the router running XP, the other
communicating wirelessly running Win98. The internet connection is sharing
nicely, but the computers cannot see one another for file viewing and
transfer. At one point it was working properly.
Where do I need to look to find the source of the disconnect?
Thanks, Bryan

First of all, make sure that File and Printer sharing is
installed and enabled on both computers.
Secondly, ensure that they are in the same workgroup
(defaults to MSHOME). In Win XP, right click My
Computer, select properties, then click the "Computer
Name" tab. This will let you set the workgroup name. In
Win 98, double click the Network icon in control panel
and click the identification tab.
Lastly, enable DHCP in your TCP/IP properties. In Win XP,
Control Panel -> network connections. Right click your
network card, click properties, double click TCP/IP,
check obtain address and DNS automatically. In Win 98,
Control Panel -> then double click Network. Double click
TCP/IP. Click the IP address tab. Click Obtain IP
address automatically. On my network (Win XP with an old
Win 98 laptop), I had to also click the Gateway tab and
set the gateway to my router's home network address.
Almost all home routers default to 192.168.1.1
Reboot both machines with fingers crossed.

also, make sure if you are using a firewall, that you set the permissions to
allow the other computers access.
