Wireless network works fine until....

I have recently had success getting assistance from these groups so I am
hoping to push my luck and try for some more.

I have a three PC network all running WinXp Pro, Norton AV and Norton
Internet Security.

Each PC has a Dlink G520 wireless network card communicating to a Dlink
DI-624 router. The network works perfectly (almost) with all PC's
communicating to each other their peripherals and the Internet
until...........

On one machine when Norton Internet Security is installed it can no longer
view other PC's via Explorer or My Network Places etc. The Internet still
works perfectly and I can ping them via their automatically assigned IP
address'. I can not ping them via their names. If I click start and run and
type in
\\IP-ADDRESS I can see the shared folders and devices, if I type in
\\PC-Name , nothing.

In the advanced settings under WINS for the network card, NetBIOS is set to
default. As soon as I uninstall NIS my network is back to normal. I have
tried contacting Symantec but have not received a response.

I have installed other spam blocking software and firewall software which
work OK. But I would dearly love to get NIS to work (it used to, before the
last format).

Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Sue

Hi Linda,

Thanks to Barb Bowman pointing me in the right direction I have finally
solved the problem. It came down to Norton Internet Security and in
particular the "Personal Firewall" component.

All I had to do was specify the IP range of the computers on my network and
hey presto, the network is back to normal.

If you have a software firewall in place such as Norton Internet Security or
similar it may pay you to check these address' and make sure they are
included in the safe list.

I hope that helped.

Regards,

Sue.
