wireless network possibilities

For a few years now I have a home network setup between a desktop (WinXP
Pro) and an older laptop (WinME). I have them connected through a
crossover cable and share the internet connection from the desktop.
Because I don't have the option of highspeed in my (rural) area I have to
do with dial up on a 56k modem. I do have a second phone line that I use
for internet only.
Recently I have replaced the old laptop with a brand new one (WinXP Home)
that has the wireless option already built in.
I'm now hoping to make a wireless connection to the desktop and that way
get rid of the annoying cable which restricts me on where to put the
laptop. When I saw a wireless base station on sale I was ready to go for
it, untill the sales clerk heard that I have dial up. He immediately told
me it was not possible to do wireless with dialup.
Is this true? My understanding was that wireless would connect computers
together for networking without wires, whether I get my internet through
dialup has nothing to do with it (what if I just wanted to home network
the computers without internet at all?).
My plan was to leave the desktop cabele wired to the base station (it had
that option), so I don't have to buy a wireless card and it's not like I
would move that machine around anywhere else. The laptop would then
connect to the desktop through the wireless card that it already has
built in. Now I would be able to move the laptop anywhere in the house,
even outside.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me, or send me to a good website
to read up on it. I've looked around myself but can't find anything that
deals with wireless and dialup. They all assume everyone has highspeed
and don't even mention the fact that some people might not have that
option available :(
