I have a built in wirless card on my XP laptop. Recently
I am no longer able to select a wireless location. The
screen has gone gray. I have reinstalled the latest
driver, but I can't get this feature back. Any
suggestions?

Hi,

Which wireless network card are you using?
When you mean you're unable to select a wireless location are you saying
through the Wireless Utility program from your wireless adapter's utility?
Or are you trying to configure your wireless settings through Windows'
Wireless configurator in your Network Connections?

If you're trying to configure your Manufacturer's wireless network utility
then make sure in the windows' wireless config screen that you uncheck the
"Allow windows to configure your wireless network" and then that should make
your manufacturer's utility enabled again.

start,run
services.msc [ok]
turn the wireless zero configuration service on and set it to
automatic start up.

I sincerely appreciate your help. Unfortunately this fix
didn't work. I have tried various things. I think it is
an issue with the network adaptor not being recognized by
windows xp though the driver installed properly. My T40
IBM laptop has a FN F5 hot key that says no wireless
installed, though the wireless adaptor can connect
automatically to any unsecure network. It juse doesn't
allow me to change any settings and I don't even see the
wireless network tab on the properties of the adaptor.
Any suggestions?

I am trying to use the windows configiration tool. On the
driver properties, no window named "wireless locations"
appears. My other laptop has this window. It is where I
could hard code my SSID and WEP.

are you trying to use XP's built in wireless zero configuration to
manage the card or IBM's utility? I never use the IBM utility and the
built in wireless on my T40p works perfectly.

I am trying to use the Windows XP module. I think for now
I found a temporary solution until I correct the XP
problem. I downloaded he latest Intel ProSet for the
adapter and it appears to be working. I have heard that
the ProSet software is recommended to not be used as VPN
does not work well with it. So far I have not had
problems.
