The laser of this mouse is clear, there's no red light as with most laser and
optical mice.
A clear light, means operation in the infrared region. Such light
can come from an infrared laser diode.
A small card, like the old Radio Shack 276-1099, can detect infrared
light. The card is no longer sold. You may also be able to use a video
camera, as many of them are sensitive to infrared light. For example,
an infrared TV remote control, can be seen blinking if viewed by a
video camera.

A similar detector strip is sold here. The small area on the right
is the active area. But a video camera is a more convenient way to
check for infrared, as you don't have to search for these obscure
detector strips. This converts light from 1000nm (invisible) to
590nm (visible) or so.

Example of another one here, quite expensive, with large active area.
The results aren't typically that impressive, because you would
expect conversion efficiency to be poor. So while these strips
work, you won't be blinded by the light they output :-( At
least, I was not impressed by the Radio Shack one I own.

A cheaper one.
