Wireless modem and neighbours

This might seem a stupid question.
If I have a wireless modem set up in my home, what's to stop my next door
neighbour from using it.
If it works through the walls of my house surely it will transmit through to
next door.
Thanks

Didn't your modem come with an instruction manual? I haven't worked with
any wireless modems, but the documentation should provide you with
information on how to secure this from outside sources. Just on a wild
guess - are you talking about a wireless network router instead of a modem?

Yes it will but you can restrict the IP addresses allowed to use it which
will be explained by the router documentation (Well hopefully anyway).

Routers can give IP addresses out to anyone who asks for them, so a PC next
door can just ask and will be admitted unless you set up to avoid that.

It's actually quite complex and the technology has been improved a lot but
IMHO the biggest problem is not someone using your internet connection, it's
making an error so that someone can mess with your PC(s) You are quite right
to ask and no question seems stupid until you know the answer! :) I am
definitely no expert on wireless, perhaps you can find a better group in the
list of groups?
