Can anyone diagnose this problem? I have three laptops I'm trying to network
for file sharing. All are on the internet. That's not the problem. The
three computers are as follows: Bob's computer is the main computer with and
MS router. The other two laptops are my old one and my new one. I want to
move all of my documents from my old laptop to my new one using file sharing.
The network we currently have allows my new computer to share back and forth
with Bob's computer. It also allows my old computer to share back and forth
with Bob's computer. But it does not allow my old computer to share files
with my new computer. Just imagine a triangle of three computers. There is
two way communication between A and B, and A and C, but B and C are not
communicating. I need to know how to get B and C to commuicate so I can get
my files from B to C. Thanks to anyone who can help with this.

Barbara,

Are all these Vista machines? How are these wired together? How many NIC
Cards in Bob's Machine? Are you using a hub? Do all the machines show up
in Start > Network on every computer? By MS Router, are we to assume that
you are expecting Bob's computer to use ICS routing? Any special s/w in
that machine to do that or is it setup for the native Vista s/w to do it.
Can we talk you into buying a real external router to do it? Maybe even a
wireless one? :-)

The Vista help section on ICS is pretty good. Have you used these settings?

You don't say what all the OS are, XP or vista, or both!!!!!

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include
Vista in your “New†Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to
adding a Vista computer to it.
