I already read 810020,

but this one seems to be focused on computers that were shut down or
hibernating.

Mine was never shut down or hibernating. A wireless network became
available, then it went away, and now I can't get XP to stop popping
up the beige bubble that says "wireless connection unavailable", in
the bottom right corner.

What can I do?

chris

Make sure your preferred connection is in the Preferred connections
window and remove all others in that window. Then uncheck the box
Automatically connect to non-preferred networks. in the Advanced button
in Wireless Networks tab.

Q [I suppose there is logic in the layout of the networking dialogs, but
it escapes me]

Thanks. I was able to solve this by going to control panel->network
connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection, and click
disable. Then click enable.

well I lied. I think Quaoar's suggestion worked.
