Hello. Trying to get XP Pro to STAY connected to my
wireless net after I turn the SSID broadcast off. I have
set the adapter settings manually and entered the WEP key
and all that jazz but as soon as I disable the SSID
broadcast and then have to reboot my machine for one
reason or another, XP is dumbfounded. Enable it and XP
finds it with all the settings intact like it was never
gone.... thanks in advance

I read that and my best answer is... sort of, basically!
That is EXACTLY what is happening except the 2 network
scenario part because I haven't run into that. If I have
to reboot after I have disabled the broadcast then my
machine will just find nothing. "LAN disabled no wireless
connection available, blah blah blah" If I disable the
broadcast AFTER I have rebooted then the connection
remains solid, no problems. I have had both a Win 98 and
a W2k machines on my network and they do not experience
this problem. The other thing I don't quite understand is
that when I turn off the "Use Windows to configure my
wireless network settings" option, XP grays out the
Preferred networks box completely and the Configure
button in the Avalable networks box so basically I have
to use the Available network which only shows up if it's
SSID is being broadcast DURING the boot. SORRY TO BE SO
WORDY!

there are three or four hardware versions of the WUSB11 and different
drivers available for most of them. which hardware version do you have
and which driver? you should check for a driver update.

the use windows to configure wireless option defaults to "on" so that
you can use the native WZC. some vendors have their own utilities to
select the SSID and specify encryption. if you wanted to use the
vendor util, you would turn this off and that would grey out the
choices as you have seen.

Welllllll... it all sounds good on paper but none of that
has made a difference. :) REGARDLESS of everything that I
have done or tried, XP will NOT connect to my network
with the SSID Broadcast disabled. Won't see it, can't
manually add it, nothing! I do have all the upadated
drivers for all my hardware, including the firmware for
the router, all of which has made no difference. I tried
to install the Linksys Lan Monitor Util to set this up
but XP won't even let the Setup.exe file start! It's not
like I can't live with my current situation but I would
rather not broadcast my SSID to the world and for the
mere fact that "I shouldn't have to!" Thank's for the
help...
