Wireless Connection for Windows 2000 desktop

have a Windows 2000 deskptop, a D-Link DI 764 wireless router(having
802.11a, 802.11b) and an EDIMAX 802.11g wireless card for the desktop
machine. I am unable to connect to the internet through this set up.
Actually, I do have the network connection icon displayed and I can
even do a successful ping on web domains(say www.microsoft.com) but when I
try opening a browser, it just says web page not found.

I checked the DNS/DHCP settings and nothing is "hard-wired" there and
it is set to obtain that information automatically.

I have 2 other laptops(one XP and one windows 2000) using a D-link
wireless card(802.11a) and working perfectly fine. Can anyone please
tell me if I am missing something here?

From a command prompt;
ipconfig /all

and compare the settings.

Dave,
if I may join in here, thanks, with a question about ipconfig /all:
I have used it on several occasions, but was only ever able to see the
configuration of the very computer, I'm typing from. Others suggest, I
should be able to see all configurations on the network?
My network consists of 2 PCs (Win2000), hardwired to Modem/Router/Switch via
LAN.
Everything else works, I can share with the other PC and access the
internet.
My firewalls are configured to accept each other.

Thanks for any help

-------------
since you get an IP allocated, it may be a security access issue.
Try disabling your PC firewall, also try a different browser (Firefox
maybe).
Try other servers like mail, IRC, ICQ, FTP, do they work ?

H.N.

plus have a look in the router, whether there are any filters set against
your PC.
It's all what I can think of atm.

Try http://72.14.203.104/ If that works then from a command prompt;

Well firstly, thanks for the attempts to solve this guys! Now to the issues
.... I unraveled some interesting "conditions" late last night ...

1. http://72.14.203.104 did not open in IE or Netscape in my desktop. I just
got a webpage not found message. It did go to the google site when I tried it
in my laptop.
2. I had disabled my PC firewall already. The only thing I have in place now
is WEP encryption.
3. FTP, Telnet to a specific domain works from my laptop(in which browser
connections also work) but they do NOT work from my desktop
4. I had disabled all the filtering in my router
5. The EDIMAX wireless card I use in my desktop ... I tried using that in my
laptop and it works perfectly fine ... so nothing wrong with the
driver/hardware of the wireless card.
6. I took the USB wireless card out and connected a long ethernet cable from
my desktop first to the router and then directly to the cable modem. In both
the cases ... I had the network connection icon show up ... but I could not
even do a ping on command prompt (I could atleast ping with the USB wireless
card).

I think #6 is the most vital, tells me that the trouble is somewhere in the
system driver ... if I am not able to get connectivity even with a direct
connection to the cable modem sans any kind of firewall.

Any more suggestions at this point people?

Well, apologies for the confusing update guys. I just found that #6 below is
not fully accurate. I restarted my machine and when connected directly with
an ethernet cable, the situation is same as with the USB wireless card. I can
ping websites through a command prompt but cannot open them in a browser. I
can open the router admin page(http://192.168.0.1) in a browser.

You didn't answer. From a command prompt;

nslookup ls

on both and again compare.

| Well, apologies for the confusing update guys. I just found that #6 below
is
| not fully accurate. I restarted my machine and when connected directly
with
| an ethernet cable, the situation is same as with the USB wireless card. I
can
| ping websites through a command prompt but cannot open them in a browser.
I
| can open the router admin page(http://192.168.0.1) in a browser.

Try setting the IP address static to;
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.101

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : (use your ISP DNS server addresses here)

Else you might give these a go.

| Dave,
| thanks for that info and the link !

Well, I have tried hardcoding the IP, subnet, gateway and the DNS server of
my ISP(nc roadrunner) and I rebooted the machine, but still the same
condition. I seem to have tried the steps mentioned in the 4 websites one way
or the other but to no avail ...

1.
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/ar...bleshooting-Wireless-Network-Connections.html

I have the latest drivers and my DHCP(before I hardcoded the IP) and WEP
were correct and I have disabled MAC filtering until I get connectivity in
this.

2. http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101179.asp

The only new thing in that website is changing the MTU. I have to download a
program to be able to change MTUs and once I change the MTU in my desktop, I
have to change it to the same number in the router and other laptops I have.
This is something I am not inclined to do now since everything else besides
the desktop is working perfectly well(don't wanna mess them up as well)

3. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/troubleshoot_wireless.htm

The mention of Access Points in #3 does not apply as much since I am using
my USB wireless card in station mode now. But what does apply in that link is
the point about mixing old mode(2 Mbps) and new mode(802.11b, 11 Mbps). My
USB card is 802.11g and my router is 802.11a/b. But again, the same USB card
works perfectly well when used with my laptops.

4.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pr...elp/ecc10b32-898a-435f-9d5c-01c25fb4d1f6.mspx

The one new thing I found in #4 is using Windows for Wireless configuration
settings. But I don't think my EDIMAX USB wireless card has that option from
what I can see. So, this seems ruled out as well.

Arun,
I've just only started to mess with wireless myself, so I can't really give
you any expert advice. But what I would probably do at this stage - start
from scratch and most basic.

1. try to hook up PC directly to the modem without network, reconfigure
TCP/IP, install Client for Microsoft Network. Don't forget to tick "obtain
IP address and DNS server automatically" in the TCP/IP properties.
2. try just hardwired connection first.
3. disable any background firewall, viruschecker.
4. put a web address (Google or whatever) in the browser's trusted zone and
try that.
5. try a different network card in the PC.
6. drag the PC to a different modem/router access.

Sorry that I can't give you any more help than my 2 cents worth. I hope
you'll get it sorted.
H.N.

Hi Arun,

Sometimes network driver layers can get damaged (e.g. by removing spyware or
virus).
Following programs are safe to run and can't hurt (helped me out too).

1. Run WinSockFix at
www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
.. If not working for you, proceed to step 2.

2. Run LSP-fix at www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Just another wild guess ...
Could there be in the router a security rule that prevents you from
accessing internet?
Like URL-blocking or port being 80 closed for you IP ?

Report back what you got.

HTH,
John7
