Hi to all of you,

I know tis may seem a daft question to most of you, but I
am a little confused as to what my needs are in reference
to allowing my wireless equipped laptop to be able to use
my desktop broadband conection. I recently purchased a
Linksys WAP (WAP54g) believing that this would enable me
to connect my cable modem this and then i would be able
to connect to this using my wifi equipped laptop. I know
believe I also need a specific broadband router Is this
the case?...and i would better off buying the Linksys
WRT54G.....please help a confused person !!!!!

many thanks
Trev

If you want to connect the laptop to your broadband
connection you have a couple of options, the easiest, but
most expensive is to have your broadband modem connected
to a wireless router and then connect both the desktop
and the laptop through that, note if your modem isn't
able to have a RJ45 connection to it then a wireless
router with an inbuilt modem.

The next way it to have your broadband comming into the
desktop and setting up an ad-hoc network, using the
desktop as a gateway. This way is very fiddly, the
desktop has to be on for you to be able to access the
internet and if you have more than one user account then
it will usually go to pot if someone else logs on and you
will have to network them again.
