Wireless "Auto" connection not working

I posted this problem on the Win General group without much success.

I'm trying to fix a problem on a friend's laptop. His LT will not
automatically log on to the wireless connection.

We are using the WinXP wireless tool (wizard?) and it is set to auto
connect yet the LT just fails to "acquire an address."

If we shut down the firewall AND then hit REPAIR it will connect manually.

The firewall can then be restarted and everything works fine until the
next re-boot. We then have to repeat the process.

Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

what firewall are you using? some third party firewalls require you
to permit the local subnet, etc.

Hi Barb,

He is using CA (Computer Associates EZ Firewall) which on his version is
really Zone Alarm.

Looking at his configuration, the IP Address/Subnet appears there just
as it does on mine (separate computers and separate wireless net) - his
IP is there and it is followed by 255.255.255.0

After we go through the shutdown of EZ Firewall, he hits "repair" and
then it acquires the address it needs. Then we enable EZFW and a look at
the firewall settings show the correct IP and Subnet.

The firewall is blocking ICMP packets. In ZA, you get around this problem
by putting all computers on the LAN into the trusted zone.

Thanks Jim, but what do I enter for the "computer?"

I know there is a column for "NAME", "IP/SITE," "Entry Type," and "Zone."

I know what to put in for everything but name - On my PC, the name shows
up as my Belkin Notebook card, on the problem PC it shows up as the
"Intel nnnnn" (built in wireless). Do I enter that? or Laptop? or ???
