Wireless association fails

I have a particular W2k machine which tends to not want to associate
with a friends network.

I've tried reseting the card, dis/reen-abling the network, different
cards, etc. I can see the network just fine. (good signal quality and
strength) rebooting the computer, reinstalled drivers,
etc... sometimes i will get lucky and it will associate.... but
usually not.

When I start the network (and my machine claims connection), the ip
sits at 0.0.0.0 for a while then goes to a 69..... address.

This machine *used* to associate with his network. (interestingly when
others couldn't since i had an external USB device which i could
position for best signal)

He is running an unencrypted network (all data is point to point
encrypted and the house is isolated, so he isn't worried) so it's not
WEP problems.

Other machines can establish the connection.

The only thing i can think is that perhaps I've installed too many
network interfaces with the computer (i'm up to 7 i think) since i
have several brands of wireless cards. (I thought w98 had a limit, but
i didn't think w2k had one)

Has anyone seen this behavior, and have you found a solution?
Any recommendations on what else to try/look for?

I guess the 69.-- IP address is a Win default and not on the network
subnet? If so, the DHCP server is not able to assign an IP address for
some reason. Does the network router have DHCP enabled? Or maybe you
have your connection set for static addressing? How about a MAC filter?

I can't think of much else that could cause the problem.
Good luck, jimbo
