I have enough money to buy one omni-directional antenna booster.
have my wireless router downstairs and my computer upstairs. Shoul
I install the antenna booster to my router or to my network card

In theory, with only two computers it shouldn't make much, if any,
difference but the router is the place to put it in case you ever have more
than one computer talking to it.

Turn the existing aerial around so it's horizontal.
 
on another note about boosting,, make sure you have GOOD security, as your
going to cover a wider area with your connection.
