Life is never simple in the world of networking. What you need depends on a
number of factors, not least of which is how much you wish to spend. When I
set mine up I did not have a large selection of hardware. I have a
cable,(DSL) modem and it is connected to a D-Link 704 router/hub via
Ethernet. One of the hub ports connects to a Belkin 802.11b access point.
I then have a Belkin PCMCIA card and a US Robotics PCI card that connect to
the access point.
Since I run a guest house for business persons and a number of them want
internet access I allow them to connect when they stay with us. I have had
several different hardware implementations connect and all are successful.
The system I have is 10Mb max or the old style Ethernet, however the hub in
the router is 10base100 for high speed transfer from large system to laptop.
Presumably the BT modem has an Ethernet output, this can be connected to any
access point with a "cross over" cable. That is the minimum you require and
since you are interfacing to a device that only runs at 512Kb you only need
the 10Mb variety of Ethernet. This is the least expensive and easiest
system to install. It lacks any capability to secure your system from
attack via the internet however. To implement this your will have to
install a router between the access point and the modem. These come in a
variety of configurations, some of which have the access point within.
Good luck and if you need any further assistance E-Mail me at
