Hello

I'm had this fault since I bought the notebook last September. It's been
investigated by my computer supplier who maintains that it is a a
Vista-related problem and not a hardware fault.

After waking up from sleep, the wireless adaptor doesn't work. The device
has disappeared from Device Manager, and there is an PlugPlayManager system
event logged - see details below. The only way to get the wireless adaptor
working again is to be a restart of Vista.

Does anyone have any experience of this fault and know how to cure this
problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Barb and thanks for your interest.

It's a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 1718 notebook running Vista Home Premium.
The BIOS is version 1.09 which is the latest on the company's web site.

The fault occurs after waking the notebook up from sleep mode. I have a
feeling, currently unproven, that this only happens when the notebook is
running on battery power.

How frustrating! I had trouble with USB network adapters and setting their
power settings to not let the OS put them to sleep to save power helped a
bit. A general recommendation I make is to go into the properties and look at
each item to see what is available and if it makes sense.

Unfortunately, for my primary desktop the only thing that stabilized my
wireless network was a combination of new drivers from the vendor and the
currently beta SP1 for Vista.

I see the vendor recommends the latest D2301 driver for connectivity issues,
but it is a year old (Version: 6.0.1039.1094 R1.09D).

Fujitsu also mentions how to turn on the WLAN at boot in the BIOS:
Solution: To switch on the WLAN automatically at system start, please enter
the following BIOS setting:

Open the BIOS Setup Utility by pressing [F2] after switching on the AMILO.
Goto menu Advanced and change the option "Default Wireless Setting" to
"Wireless LAN". Save changes and exit BIOS. Now the WLAN adapter is enabled
by default.

Also: Running MS Windows Vista please use the WLAN driver version 7.3.1.42
for the LiteOn WN2302A / AR5005G WLAN card.

I think their site mixes up laptop versions so not all may apply. :(

Sorry if you have already tried all this...

go into device manager, expand network adapters. right click the
wireless adapter and check the power management settings. is the box
checked to allow the adapter to be turned off to save power? if yes,
uncheck it and see what happens.

Some notes to clarify my position:
a) This fault is intermittent - when I try to force it to happen, it
doesn't, but then maybe a day or a week later it will happen, when I'm not
expecting it!
b) I've not installed the two other drivers mentioned in the FSC support web
site - my notebook has a Atheros AR5007EG WLAN adaptor.
c) The Atheros WiFi adaptor is integrated into the notebook, i.e. it's not a
plug-in to the USB socket.
d) I tried the BIOS setting to turn WLAN on at boot time, but was advised by
Fujitsu Siemens that the notebook doesn't support the feature. With this
model you have o put up with pressing the WiFi button after logging-in to
Vista.
e) FSC support reckoned that the fault would go away if I reinstalled Vista
- not something I've done yet nor do I want to until I really have to. Maybe
Vista SP1 will resolve this fault?

The box in the wireless adaptor's power settings was checked to allow the
adapter to be turned off to save power, so I've unchecked it and will watch
and patiently wait to see if it has resolved the problem.

Thanks to both Barb and PNutts for your kind advice.

SP1 is coming fairly soon and it is certainly worth waiting to see
if the issue is resolved. Odd that you have to push the Wifi button
each time.

The fault (i.e. wireless network adaptor disappeared from Device Manager)
cropped up again since unchecking the box which governs the wireless
adaptor's power saving facility. Doh! It was worth a try anyhow. One small
difference - this time the PlugPlayManager error event didn't get logged.

Anymore suggestions for things to try - anyone?

Same thing

Hi,

I've also got an Amilo 1718 with Vista Home Premium and the same BIOS / wireless drivers you are using. I get the same problem - the adapter seems to power-off when the lid is down and then can't be found by the OS when the lid is opened, even though the wireless hardware button toggles the LED indicator on/off.

I did get it to auto-power on after boot-up using the BIOS setting, so that's not the issue. Seems to be something to do with Vista's power-management routines.

There seem to be numerous articles at amilo-forum.com - I'm off to search there.
