wireless adapter help

Hello
I am very new to wireless broadband and need a little help please.

I have wireless on vista laptop no adapter needed, also on XP pc but
adapter needed (even though tower has some kind of wireless ariel
coming out of one of the card slots on the back?? not sure what this
is) and also wireless on XP laptop which also needs an adapter.

My wireless router only came with one adapter, and I have contacted
wireless supplier but they say they only provide one.
Can I use any wireless adapter? or does it have to be the same as the
one i got with the router?
Please forgive my ignorance, any help is gratefully received.

First, we need to get the terminology straight, so we know what your
issue is.

When you say "wireless broadband" do you mean the service offered by
cell phone companies such as Sprint and AT&T, where you can get an
Internet connection essentially anywhere you can make a cell phone call?
Or do you mean what is usually called "wifi," in which you have a
cable or DSL connection to the Internet and a wireless router that
enables you to share that connection among several computers?

It sounds as if you mean the latter.

Assuming that you want to share a cable or DSL connection via a wireless
router, then you can buy the necessary adapters from a wide variety of
manufacturers. Nevertheless, for optimum performance, it's best to
match some of the features between router and adapter.

Please identify the make and model of your router and the adapter you
have.

Also, what makes you think that you need an adapter for your tower if
you already have something installed in it with an antenna? Depending
on where your tower is relative to where your cable/DSL connection is
(and thus where the router is located), you may want to connect the
tower to the router using an Ethernet cable rather than wirelessly.

If you right-click My Computer, select Properties, Hardware tab, click
"Device Manager" button, you will see an entry for "Network Adapters."
Click the + to the left of that and then list in your next post all of
the entries that appear under "Network Adapters."

Wireless routers work on different signal type. Wireless networks
signals are: 802.11am 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n. Several wireless
routers do support more signals than others. Depending on the make /
model, 802.11g routers can also support 802.11b signala and 802.11n
router can support the 802.11g / b signals. 802.11a work differently
and usually only work with the same level of wireless signal routers,
unless the manfacturer has included support for the oldest signal.
