Hi,

I have a laptop that has both wireless and wired capability. I want it to
use the wired connection when plugged in and only default to the wireless
when not connected. How do I accomplish this? It seems to be picking up both
simultaneously.

Thank you in advance.

Windows XP should already be doing what you want automatically.

When two network connections are available simultaneously, Windows XP
uses the one with the higher rated speed and doesn't use the other one
at all. For details, see:

An explanation of the Automatic Metric feature for Internet Protocol
routes

To force Windows XP to use a specific network connection, assign a
metric value to each one, giving the lowest value to the desired
connection:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the desired connection.
3. Click Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Properties > Advanced.
5. Un-check "Automatic metric".
6. Enter a number between 1 and 9999 for the "Interface metric".

Also, many laptops with built-in wireless have a switch or a key press
combination to turn off the wireless adapter (to save power). See your
laptop User Guide for details.
