wiping off hard discs

i need to reinstall xp but guess i must wipe existing hard drives. problem is
i cant log on to xp whatsoever.( probably virus or corrupt disc etc)can i /
how do i, wipe existing discs without logging on ?? i think i have to start
up in dos, is this correct ? if so what buttons must i press ?? thanks for
any advice.

Set your BIOS so that the CD drive is the first boot device,
then boot the machine with your WinXP CD. When prompted,
allow the hard disk to be formatted.
 
If you think that you have viruses on your computer. I would recommend
finding out if the hard drive manufacture of the hard drive in your pc has a
low-level format utility. This will reset you hard drive as if it has just
left the manufacture. This will wipe out any virus on you pc. By doing the
format from the Windows XP cd you still could wind up having that same virus
on your pc since this is a higher level format which does not erase all the
information from the hard drive.

i get the option to boot from disc when it says push any key i do an nothin
happens but the disc works when im on my desktop
