hi,

I found many tools to wipe free space on disk (space left by deleted
files) but found none which also deletes filenames of the files in the
free disk space (these filenames may be seen with any undele tool)

is it possible to also remove filenames ? if so with what tool ?

TIA
Pierre

Which undelete programs have you experienced this with? I have not tried
many of them but I know that the program "eraser", when used to wipe
free space, leaves no traces which an undelete program such as
"restoration" can put a name to. All that is left at the end of an
eraser run are whatever scraps the operating system has worked with in
the mean time.

I've just downloaded "eraser" and tried it: when I ask it to wipe free
space, "eraser" crach after about 6% of it works. I tried many tiemes
with the same result.
the disk on which I'm trying to wipe free space is a 320GB USB
external drive with ~150GB free space

I'm running XPSP2

I've not experienced any problems with eraser. I've erased the free
space on drives up to 400gB with no errors although I have not tried it
with any external drives. Have you done a "chkdsk"
on the drive in question? There could be some error in the drive's
structure if you have been repeatedly using other programs to
erase/recover with it. Other than that I can only suggest reporting the
problem to the website where you downloaded the program.
