XP has file compression built in.
In Windows Explorer,Right click the file you want to compress and go down
to, 'Send to' and there should be an option saying ' Compressed (zipped)
Folder'

Hope this helps,

Simon.

Hi casey,

The ability to handle .zip files is built in. Just double click one to open
it. To create one, right click the file and use send to-->compressed file.

I did not know this. Rick I currently use Winzip9. Is there any difference
between the apps?

No so big , I think , but if you use WinRAR there is difference because
WinRAR supports more archive variants .

And that's relevant to the OP's question, uhhh, how?

Yes, considerable differences. Winzip has functionality like being able
to incrementally add modified files to an archive, and password-protect
archives among others.

Hi Gordon,

You can password a WinXP-generated zip file as well. Once created, double
click the zip and you'll find it on the file menu. But generally, yes,
winzip has a bit more functionality. Pretty similar to any of the built-in
features of WinXP - they're basic and allow for functionality but sometimes
not full usability depending on circumstances.

Hi Rick - thanks for the info! I didn't know that!

Is there a way to get Win XP to extract the files from a split (multi-part)
zip file created in WinZip? Win XP can see all of the files in the main .zip
part of the split archive, but when I run the "Extract All" wizard, it
reports that the compressed folder is corrupted.

Thanks,
KEK

The files are just split. Just join them together then it is a complete zip file.
copy /b zip1.zip+zip2.zip+zip3.zip NewZip.zip
See Help on Copy for more.
