Winzip and XP

On my previous system I used to have a Winzip 7 that was listed as "Personal
Edition" and was free. I know that XP has a built in zip viewer but I would
still prefer to use Winzip. My questions:

1. If I use Winzip, should I stop XP from using its own utility? How?
2. I went to the Winzip website and noticed that it is no longer free. Does
the free version no longer exist?
3. Winzip version 7 worked just fine in my previous NT4 system. Should be
OK in XP - right?

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,
1) WinZip should associate itself with the .ZIP file extension, so XP would
no longer be the default program form ZIP files. That should be all you
have to do.

2) This I'm not sure of. If it's not available from their website, it's a
pretty good indication that it's no longer available, but checking
Download.com couldn't hurt.

3) It's worth a shot... I haven't been able to find anything one way or
another about WinZip 7 on XP. Worst case scenario is doing a System Restore
to a time before you installed it, but I can't imagine that WinZip would do
that much damage.

It tends to "take over" from the built in ZIP file utility.

The "free" version was actually an evaluation version. You can download the
new one and just keep using it in evaluation mode - the nag screen's a
little more annoying - or find and download WinRAR, which is free.

I'd think it should be.

You could go to their web site www.winzip.com and download their latest
version and pay their $29.00 US registration fee. Works great and has been
free upgrades for as long as I can remember as long as you keep you license
number safe.

You don't have to, but I would, since when you let XP have charge of
..zip files it tends to treat them as folders, and things like searching
(or even opening explorer window) will look into all the .zip files,
which can take an age.

start, run, regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll will turn off the XP handling. Same
again without the /u will turn it back on, should you want to. The XP
version has trouble with some sorts of filenames which Winzip handles
just dandy.

It never was (as long as I can remember it) free, it was always
'shareware' .. however few people ever pay the $29 for lifetime upgrade
and support (I did, years ago), they just live with the nag screen.

Yes. I used it for a while, although I'm on 8.1 now (and there's
probably a newer one than that, if I could be bothered to upgrade).

The current version of WinZip is 8.1 SR-1. So far as I know, it was
never a free program. It is shareware, i.e., you may download a fully
functional version and run it. Until you buy it and register, you will
get an obnoxious nag screen. I bought WinZip when it was version 3 or
4, and have been provided free upgrades ever since.

Same here, the only thing I have ever done (in the later versions) is delete
..cab files from winzip, just in case there is ever a conflict with restore
files etc.

Been using it since version 1. Best $29 I have ever spent for
software.

Did it. Thanks.

How do you know these arcane things !!?

I may have too because I do not have a nag screen - but who remembers!

Thanks.

25 years in the industry, and lots of free time since I retired. 8>.

Actually you can answer many question just be knowing where to find
'groups.google.com' .. ask it about 'Windows XP ZIP folders' and you'll
get hundreds of hits, many from this very newsgroup.

Open WinZip, Help, About WinZip. If it's registered, you'll find the info
there. Copy down the exact name and registration number and keep it for
safekeeping -- if you ever have to install it on a new system, you can
install the shareware version and insert the registration info again.
